Michigan, Illinois school officials go viral for snow day announcement videos

To the delight of their students — and the internet — three school officials have gone viral for announcing snow days with rousing musical remixes that hit all the right notes, with the first two opting for a take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and the other inspired by Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby.”
On Jan. 28, Superintendent Ben Mainka and Swartz Creek High Principal Jim Kitchen of Swartz Creek Community Schools in Genesee County, Mich. announced that there would be no school the next day to the tune of “Hallelujah” — and in matching school zip-ups and sunglasses, the Detroit Free Press reported.

“It’s a snow day, a winter cold day, stay home and just play, it’s a great family day!” the pair croons, jokingly urging the students to “not sleep until noon” and offer their parents a helping hand around the house.
Footage of Mainka and Kitchen’s creative tune has since been viewed over 3,800 times on YouTube, while winning thousands of clicks through other platforms, as well.
The two weren’t exactly the first to come up with the idea, though. On Jan. 27, Principal Neil Lesinski Cary-Grove High School in Cary, Ill. took to Facebook to remind students that there would be no school the next day due to the wild weather — accompanied by two very special musical guests.
In the clip, which has since been viewed over 78,000 times on the social network, Lesinski belts out an all-new version “Ice Ice Baby” while his two young children — Leo, 3, and Ella,1 — sit quietly in his lap, Good Morning America reported.

“Will it ever stop yo? I don’t know! Turn on some Netflix and binge a show. To the extreme it’s like a cold monsoon. We’re gonna have school a few days in June,” the school official sings.
Unsurprisingly, the musical prowess of all three gentlemen has dazzled those both within and beyond their school communities.
“I don’t even [have] a child in your schools [and] I loved this!” one YouTube fan commented on Mainka and Kitchen’s clip.
“That’s my [principal] and superintendent I am proud to be a Dragon!!!!” another agreed.

“I don’t think the administrators were this fun and amazing back when I attended Swartz Creek, not even years later when my 3 children were all Dragons! Great singing voices too! Love it!” one said.
Facebook fans, too, heaped nothing but praise on the Lesinski family’s rendition.
“Well done, Mr. L,” one supporter exclaimed.
“Best snow day announcement ever!” another agreed.
